What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are mental health conditions that affect a person’s emotional state over extended periods. They influence how you feel and can impact your behaviors, relationships and ability to perform daily tasks. Mood disorders often require professional care, but with the right help, recovery and renewed stability are well within reach.

There are two major types of mood disorders—depressive disorders and bipolar disorders—each encompassing different forms with distinct characteristics.

Depressive Disorders

Depressive disorders are marked by a persistent lack of joy and energy, affecting how an individual experiences life. Emotional and physical symptoms make even daily tasks feel daunting. Common forms of depressive disorders include:

  • Major Depression. Major depression often brings about persistent feelings of sadness, worthlessness and exhaustion. It can last for weeks or months, leaving individuals disconnected from activities they once loved.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This type of depression is tied to changes in seasons, often occurring in the darker, colder months. Fatigue, irritability and withdrawal from social activities are common symptoms.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD). Also known as dysthymia, PDD is a longer-term condition that features less intense but chronic symptoms of depression, leaving individuals feeling perpetually down or empty.
  • Depression Related to Medical Conditions or Substance Use. Depression can also arise from physical health conditions or as a side effect of medications and substance use. These cases highlight the intricate relationship between mental and physical health.

Bipolar Disorders

Bipolar disorders involve a rollercoaster of emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depressive episodes), often disrupting work, relationships and self-care. Types of bipolar disorders include:

  • Bipolar I Disorder. This form features intense manic episodes that can last a week or more, significantly impacting judgment and increasing risky behavior.
  • Bipolar II Disorder. Individuals with this disorder experience less severe manic episodes called hypomanias, alongside more debilitating depressive episodes.

Symptoms and Causes

Mood disorders are fueled by a range of contributing factors, from genetic predispositions to environmental stressors. Common symptoms include persistent sadness or emptiness, difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, fatigue, irritability and diminished interest in life. These conditions may stem from personal trauma, ongoing stress, thyroid imbalances or even substances like medications or drugs.

At Trisha Johnson Therapy Group, we know that these emotions are not something you’ve chosen, nor are they something you have to fight through on your own. There’s a path forward, and we want to help you find it.
